Our Heritage

The selection of our company name has tremendous meaning as it encompasses our guiding philosophy.

"Acequia" (pronounced ah-say-KEE-ah) is a Spanish word originating from the ancient Arabic irrigation practice of "al saqiya" or water conduit; a technology brought to Spain during the occupation of the Iberian Peninsula.  The Spaniards adapted this sophisticated and efficient watering method and utilized it throughout their colonization of the Americas.  During that period, acequias required water stewards, or overseers, which were assigned to ensure that colonies were established with sound environmental and agricultural principals.

Acequia became a system of communal water management in Spain and in the original American colonies.  It became synonymous with the belief that water is a life-blood of existence.  This belief played an important role in bringing many partnerships together throughout history including the community of farmers who shared the water and labor of maintaining the acequias through cooperation and mutual respect.

The team members at Acequia hold a common belief that continued survival of our culture is inextricably linked to our relationship with the land and water.  We recognize that landscapes are extremely important to human life, and it is our mission to help preserve our green environment through responsible irrigation.  Our goal is to continue the history of acequia by building partnerships with our clients, water purveyors and horticultural community to conserve water.  It's our passion, and more importantly, it's the right thing to do.
